Chennai/Karur: An FIR has stated that actor-politician Vijay arrived late at Velusamypuram in Karur district, which contributed to the overcrowding and unrest among the attendees at his rally on September 27. This incident resulted in the deaths of at least 41 individuals and left 60 others injured. Although the FIR does not name Vijay directly, it identifies three party officials: Mathyiyalagan (Karur district secretary), Bussy N Anand (state general secretary), and CTR Nirmal Kumar (state joint secretary). The report claims that Vijay conducted unauthorized roadshows before arriving at Velusamypuram, where his vehicle stopped among the crowd. It also noted that TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) party members failed to manage their supporters or respond to police warnings regarding the crowd size.
According to police, some supporters climbed on tin sheets and tree branches, which resulted in injuries to those below as they fell, leading to a chaotic situation. The death toll from the stampede rose to 41 on Monday, following the passing of a 60-year-old woman from her injuries at a hospital. The FIR indicates that around 4:45 PM, Vijay entered Karur district through Velayuthampalayam and Thavittupalayam, causing delays by holding unauthorized roadshows at various locations. The report also mentions that receptions were held at multiple spots, further adding to the delays.
By 7 PM, Vijay arrived at the Velusamypuram junction, where the FIR details the events leading up to the stampede, noting that his campaign vehicle stopped in the midst of a large crowd of party supporters, exacerbating the situation.
