Thrissur (Kerala), April 17 (). Kerala Police has registered an FIR against the owners of Great Bombay Circus for using unregistered animals along with clipping the wings of birds to prevent them from flying.

This action has been taken following a complaint by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

The AWBI is the prescribed authority under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, which regulates the use of animals for performances in the country.

The FIR was registered at Thrissur East Police Station for cognizable offenses under sections 429 and 289 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Besides this, the FIR also records violation of sections 3 and 11(1)(a), 11(1) (l) and sections 26 and 38 of the PCA Act, 1960.

PETA India Cruelty Response Coordinator Saloni Sakariya says, circus workers often clip the wings of birds and put them in cages to prevent them from flying.

As of 2022, the trial proceedings against Great Bombay Circus are pending before the Court of Judicial Magistrate of the First Class, Malavadi. It is based on an FIR lodged against the circus by the Mysore police following a complaint by PETA India for similar offenses related to cruelty to birds and violation of registration certificate of their performing animals.
