In a significant move to enhance cancer care accessibility, Kotak Mahindra Prime Limited (KMPL) has joined forces with the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) at the Tata Memorial Centre. This partnership involves the installation of the SDX® Voluntary Breath Hold System at the Proton Therapy Centre located in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The inauguration was led by Mr. Suraj Rajappan, President & Whole Time Director of KMPL, alongside Mr. Muralidharan S, Business Head of KMPL.
Advanced Cancer Treatment Technology
Navi Mumbai, 11 December 2025 | The SDX® system is designed to assist doctors in delivering high-precision radiation therapy by guiding patients to hold their breath during treatment. This is particularly crucial for cancers affecting the lungs, liver, pancreas, and breast, where even slight movements during breathing can displace tumors. By ensuring that radiation targets only the tumor, the SDX® system protects healthy organs and enhances treatment outcomes.
Significance of Proton Therapy
Proton therapy represents one of the most advanced cancer treatment modalities available today. This collaboration ensures that cutting-edge cancer treatments are accessible to those in need. The SDX® system is fully compatible with ACTREC’s proton therapy setup, making it vital for the safe and effective treatment of motion-sensitive cancers. For instance, without this system, proton therapy for liver cancer could pose safety risks due to organ movement during respiration, which can be up to 3 cm.
Commitment to Patient Care
ACTREC serves over 35,000 patients each year, with many coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This partnership guarantees that advanced cancer treatments are within reach for those who require them the most. Dr. Rahul Krishnatry from TMC emphasized the importance of precision in radiation delivery for tumors that shift during breathing. He noted that this upgrade allows ACTREC to provide proton-based SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy), improving patient survival rates and minimizing side effects.
Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Director of ACTREC, expressed gratitude towards KMPL for their contribution to this vital cause, highlighting the SDX® system as a critical technology for safe cancer treatment. He commended the radiation oncology department for their ongoing efforts to enhance treatment options for deserving patients.
This initiative also aligns with KMPL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals, which focus on improving healthcare access through infrastructure and technology advancements. Shahrukh Todiwala, Managing Director & CEO of KMPL, stated, “We believe that world-class healthcare should be accessible to all who need it. Our partnership with Tata Memorial Centre is a proud step towards delivering globally benchmarked cancer care to every patient.”
