Kshema Power's Vision for India's Renewable Energy Future

India has made considerable progress in enhancing its energy sector in recent years, effectively balancing the need for increased electricity demand with sustainability efforts. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that emerging and developing economies will account for 85% of the global rise in electricity demand over the next three years. In a discussion with Abhinand Basant, Deputy Managing Director of Kshema Power, insights were shared regarding the company’s strategic alignment with India’s ambitious renewable energy objectives. This includes supporting the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, along with new global projects in NEOM.

Basant articulates a clear vision for Kshema Power’s contribution to India’s clean energy future, discussing plans to enhance execution capacity, commitment to sustainability, and necessary policy changes to advance the sector. Kshema Power’s strategy is directly aligned with the government’s ₹75,000 crore investment aimed at reaching one crore households by 2027, making it the largest domestic rooftop initiative globally. The company is enhancing its focus on residential rooftop solutions, optimizing installation processes, and collaborating with local distribution networks. They are expanding their operations to tier-2 and tier-3 cities where the initiative’s impact will be most significant. By simplifying the customer onboarding process and offering comprehensive maintenance packages, they aim to facilitate easier adoption of solar energy.

The government’s reaffirmation of commitment through an 80% budget increase to ₹20,000 crore in the Union Budget 2025 supports the expansion of operations to meet the growing demand for residential solar solutions. Kshema Power has successfully delivered solar and wind projects across several states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. The company is now eager to expand internationally, starting with projects in NEOM and the UAE, including a groundbreaking green hydrogen plant in NEOM. Their responsibilities include constructing wind turbine foundations, with preparations underway for additional phases. Kshema Power is also actively pursuing solar projects in collaboration with leading Indian partners to serve both regional and international independent power producers (IPPs).

This strategy underscores their commitment to strengthening their global presence in the renewable energy sector while ensuring quality, precision, and timely execution. Looking ahead five to ten years, Kshema Power aims to scale its execution capacity to over 1 GW of wind EPC projects annually, facilitating rapid transitions from development to commissioning. With over 10 GW of cumulative experience and a robust development team, they aspire to contribute over 30% of India’s annual wind energy deployment, aligning with the national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Their approach emphasizes execution speed, precision engineering, and leveraging decades of expertise to help meet India’s renewable energy goals.

Regarding sustainability, Kshema Power integrates environmental protection into all phases of wind power project development, starting with meticulous site selection to avoid ecologically sensitive areas and engaging local communities to mitigate social impacts. The design phase focuses on optimizing turbine placement to minimize land use, noise, and shadow flicker, while promoting co-use of land for agriculture or grazing. During construction, they employ low-disturbance methods, responsible waste and water management, and promote local workforce involvement. Once operational, Kshema Power utilizes predictive maintenance, noise and wildlife monitoring, and biodegradable lubricants to lessen ongoing environmental impact. At the end of a turbine’s life, components are designed for modular dismantling, blade recycling, and full land restoration.

By adhering to global standards such as ISO 14001 and IFC guidelines, and integrating biodiversity protection and circular economy practices, Kshema Power ensures that their wind projects contribute to clean energy goals while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint. From their perspective, India’s wind sector would greatly benefit from policy stability, expedited approval processes, and long-term tariff visibility to attract private investments. Infrastructure upgrades, particularly in grid modernization and transmission expansion, are essential to address challenges in high-wind states. Support for hybrid models that combine wind, solar, and storage would further optimize resource use. Kshema Power engages in these discussions by providing valuable insights to industry bodies and piloting innovative project models that balance growth, sustainability, and community needs.
