Hubli, May 13 (). Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, who joined the Congress after being denied a ticket by the BJP leadership, is leading by a margin of 44,580 votes from the Athani assembly seat in north Karnataka’s Belagavi district. Former chief minister and six-time MLA from Hubballi-Central Dharwad Jagdish Shettar is trailing by a margin of 22,451 votes. Denied a ticket in the elections, Shettar left the BJP and joined the Congress.
Hubli-Central Dharwad has been a traditional stronghold of the BJP and the RSS, and was the first seat the Jana Sangh won in South India in 1968.
In Gokak, BJP leader and former minister, Ramesh Jarikiholi is trailing, while Laxmi Hebbalkar of Congress was leading in Belagavi Rural seat.
