Lieutenant Governor Calls for Arrests in Acid Attack Incident

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has voiced significant concern regarding the acid attack on a student from Delhi University, labeling it a shocking and tragic event. In response to the incident, Saxena has instructed the Delhi Police Commissioner to apprehend the perpetrators promptly and to enforce the strictest legal actions possible. In a statement from Raj Niwas, he urged Police Commissioner Satish Golcha to conduct a thorough and swift investigation. Saxena stressed that such crimes are intolerable in a civil society and highlighted the importance of a timely response to secure justice for the victim.

He also requested a comprehensive report on the incident and sought clarification on how the attackers were able to acquire acid despite an existing ban on its sale in the city. This directive reflects growing concerns regarding the enforcement of regulations surrounding acid sales. The LG has directed police officials to investigate this matter thoroughly and to establish more robust measures to prevent the illegal sale of acid in the capital. Furthermore, he assured the victim and her family of complete administrative support, urging hospital officials to provide the highest quality medical care. The LG’s involvement coincides with increased scrutiny over women’s safety in Delhi, intensifying the pressure on law enforcement to achieve prompt outcomes.

This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of current laws. In the landmark case of Laxmi vs. Union of India and Others, the Supreme Court had mandated both central and state governments to regulate acid sales and prevent such assaults. Following this ruling, the Delhi government authorized local Deputy District Magistrates to impose fines of up to ₹50,000 for violations of acid sale restrictions.
