Government and Experts Encourage Healthier Lifestyles on World Heart Day

On World Heart Day, representatives from the government, medical community, and public figures called on Indians to embrace healthier lifestyles to address the increasing risk of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among young people. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally, resulting in approximately 19.8 million fatalities in 2022, as reported by the WHO. These diseases accounted for 32% of all deaths worldwide, with heart attacks and strokes responsible for 85% of these fatalities—underscoring the critical need for prevention, early detection, and accessible healthcare. The Union Health Ministry encouraged citizens to adopt six heart-healthy practices: consume nutritious foods, reduce salt intake, quit tobacco, maintain a healthy weight, limit alcohol consumption, and engage in physical activity.

“Let us foster a heart-healthy community,” the ministry stated on X. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated this message: “May we all pledge to keep our hearts healthy through regular exercise and a balanced diet, ensuring happier lives for ourselves and our loved ones.” Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda remarked, “By embracing healthy lifestyles, individuals can greatly lower their risk of heart disease and enhance their overall well-being. This observance urges communities to prioritize early detection, timely treatment, and heart-friendly habits for a longer, healthier life.” Healthcare professionals warned that heart disease is no longer an issue limited to older individuals.

Yatharth Tyagi, Director of Yatharth Group of Hospitals, noted the increasing prevalence of heart disease among younger populations and mentioned a community event organized by Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals as part of nationwide observances. During the event, titled “Chalta Rahe Mera Dil” in Delhi, actor Bhumi Pednekar promoted cardiovascular fitness and healthy living. The event also marked the opening of the hospital’s advanced Philips Azurion Cardiac Catheterisation Lab, the first of its kind in North and West Delhi, designed to provide comprehensive interventional cardiac procedures in one location.

Pednekar emphasized the importance of minor lifestyle adjustments, stating, “Small changes, like regular walking, can go a long way.” The World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that the risk of cardiovascular disease can be mitigated by adopting a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, quitting tobacco, and reducing alcohol consumption. Dr. Shantanu Singhal from Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida, noted a concerning 30–40% rise in heart attack cases among individuals in their 20s and 30s, remarking, “Strong hearts build strong lives. Prioritize wellness, manage stress, and never skip health check-ups—because every heartbeat counts.” Social activist and BJP Mahila Morcha National Executive Member Dr. Padma Veerapaneni emphasized the significance of lifestyle changes and regular screenings for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

DK Shivakumar, a Congress leader from Karnataka, remarked, “This day serves as a reminder to prioritize health and care for the most vital aspect of our lives. Simple actions like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress-free living can greatly contribute to heart health. Let us cherish every heartbeat and safeguard it with conscious decisions.” Dr. Ajay Kaul, Chairman of Cardiac Sciences at Fortis Noida, concurred, stating, “Heart disease is largely preventable. Early diagnosis, healthy living, and public education can help mitigate this alarming trend.” Dr. V Mohan, a Padma Shri awardee and Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, added, “A healthy heart equates to a happy heart!

This #WorldHeartDay, make small changes that protect your heart and your life. Eat wisely, stay active, and manage your diabetes.”
