Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for acting like an ‘acting Prime Minister’ and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to not place full trust in him. Banerjee likened Shah to Mir Zafar, the 18th-century military leader who betrayed Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah during the Battle of Plassey. ‘Shah may one day become his (PM Modi’s) Mir Zafar. Whatever the Election Commission is doing in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is at Shah’s behest,’ she stated. Mamata’s comments occur amidst increasing Opposition concerns regarding the Election Commission (EC), which has been accused of operating under the influence of the BJP.
