Imphal, April 24 (). As resentment grew among a section of BJP legislators against Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, another ruling party legislator Raghumani Singh on Monday resigned as the chairman of the Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA).
The bureaucrat-turned-politician is the fourth BJP MLA to quit his government post in less than two weeks, claiming he was not given due responsibility, money or authority to function.
Singh, who was elected as MLA from Uripok assembly constituency in last year’s election, in his resignation letter to the chief minister said: “Due to personal reasons and also in the public interest, it is felt that at this juncture, the President of MANIREDA There is no need for me to remain as I am. Therefore, I tender my resignation from the post of Speaker and the same may kindly be accepted.
Earlier, BJP MLAs Thokchom Radheshyam and Karam Shyam had resigned as advisor to the chief minister and chairman of the Manipur State Tourism Development Corporation on April 17 and April 13, respectively. Both had served as ministers in the first Biren Singh-led government (2017–2022).
In a video clip, Shyam had said – a leader should be committed and honest instead of threatening the followers. If such threats are repeated, there is bound to be an explosion of rebellion among the followers..Manipur is becoming a corruption free state, but corruption is known only to the giver and the taker.
On 20 April, Pounam Brojen Singh resigned as the President of the Manipur Development Society. Informed sources said some more disgruntled BJP legislators are likely to quit their respective government posts and are now lobbying with the central party leadership, seeking intervention in Manipur’s affairs.
The angry legislators include some Kuki MLAs, who are reportedly unhappy with the eviction drive targeting the community. Chief Minister Biren Singh had claimed on Sunday that there was no difference of opinion or resentment among the MLAs.
The BJP government retained power for a second consecutive term in last year’s election, winning 32 seats in the 60-member assembly. Many other parties are also supporting the BJP government.
