Meta is advancing its efforts to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in social media. The company has announced that its AI translation feature for Reels on Facebook and Instagram will now include Hindi and Portuguese, in addition to English and Spanish. This expansion is designed to assist creators in reaching broader audiences and bridging language barriers within some of the most active social media communities worldwide. Originally launched earlier this year, the AI translation feature enables users to automatically translate their video content into various languages using artificial intelligence. With the new update, creators can now translate their Reels from any of the four supported languages—English, Hindi, Portuguese, or Spanish—into any of the others.
A distinguishing aspect of Meta’s translation tool is its capability to replicate the speaker’s original voice and tone, providing a natural and authentic experience. According to Meta, “the AI translate feature also mimics the voice and tone of the person speaking in the reel, making the translation appear even more authentic.” This functionality helps maintain the creator’s style and personality, even when their content is viewed in a different language. To enhance realism, Meta has also rolled out a lip-syncing feature that aligns the translated audio with the creator’s mouth movements. The company claims this feature provides a “more natural viewing experience,” minimizing the disconnect often present in dubbed videos.
Nonetheless, Meta has clarified that translated Reels will not be mandatory for users. Those who prefer to watch content in its original language can easily opt for that. Each AI-translated clip will display a “Translated with Meta AI” label for transparency. Currently, the new AI translation feature is being selectively rolled out, available only to public Instagram profiles and Facebook creators with more than 1,000 followers. Eligible creators must manually enable the translation option prior to uploading their Reels, with the ability to preview the translated version before deciding whether to publish it or retain the original. By incorporating Hindi and Portuguese—two of the most widely spoken languages globally—Meta is strategically focusing on its largest user bases.
This initiative also fosters opportunities for cross-cultural interaction. For example, an Indian creator producing Reels in Hindi can now effortlessly translate their videos into Spanish to engage Latin American audiences. Meta underscored that this is part of a broader initiative to integrate artificial intelligence across its platforms. The company noted that “Translate with Meta AI” is one of several innovations aimed at making content more global and interactive. In line with this vision, Meta has recently introduced “Vibes,” an AI-exclusive content feed on the Meta AI app, allowing users to create, share, and interact with AI-generated videos—marking a step towards shaping the future of social media experiences.
Through these advancements, Meta continues to position itself at the forefront of AI-driven creativity, empowering creators to connect with audiences across linguistic and cultural divides.
