New Delhi, May 4 (). A Delhi Police official said on Thursday that a 15-year-old youth has been arrested from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The minor is alleged to have allegedly created fake WhatsApp accounts of people and used to contact relatives to demand money in the name of emergency in the hospital.
Shahdara’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Meena said that on April 22, a complaint was received from Nitin Kumar Mittal, a resident of Krishna Nagar. In this, he told that his WhatsApp account has been hacked and someone is asking money from his relatives and friends using his identity and photo.
In his complaint, Mittal said the hacker told his relatives that he urgently needed money for hospitalization and would return the money after two days. Jashandeep Singh, a relative of the complainant, also transferred Rs 80,000 to the fraudster, the DCP said.
During the investigation, the police team collected all the information including call detail records and WhatsApp chats. All the bank details and his registered mobile number were also analysed, he said. On the basis of technical evidence, the police team raided Mandora village in Mathura district and arrested the minor.
The police have also recovered two mobile phones from his possession which were used in the crime. The officer said that the accused used to collect information from Facebook or other social media accounts.
The officer said that after this he entered the mobile number of the victim in place of the Gmail ID and also entered the mobile number in place of the password. If the mobile number and password of that Google account are the same, then he would have got his (victims) contact list from the Google account.
He would then create a fake WhatsApp account of the victim using photographs obtained from social media accounts. He then used to contact the close relatives of the victim and demand money on the pretext of emergency in the hospital.
Further investigation is being done to ascertain previous incidents with similar modus operandi and contact of previous victims is being done on the basis of call detail records and WhatsApp chats, the official said.
