Churachandpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged various groups to renounce violence, asserting that his government is committed to the people of Manipur and aims to transform the troubled state into a symbol of peace and prosperity. Speaking at a public gathering in Kuki-majority Churachandpur district during his first visit since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, Modi described Manipur as a land of hope and aspiration, lamenting that “unfortunately, violence has overshadowed this beautiful region.” He noted, “I recently met with those affected at a relief camp.
After speaking with them, I am confident that a new dawn of hope and trust is emerging in Manipur.” He emphasized the necessity of peace for development, stating that in the past 11 years, numerous conflicts in the Northeast have been resolved. He highlighted that people have opted for peace and prioritized development. Facing criticism from the opposition for his delayed visit amid prolonged ethnic strife, the Prime Minister asserted that the Centre’s efforts are beginning to show results. “We have seen recent negotiations in the Hills and the Valley for agreements with various groups. These efforts are part of the Government of India’s commitment to fostering peace through dialogue, respect, and mutual understanding,” he explained.
Modi appealed to all organizations to pursue peace and realize their aspirations. “I stand with you… The Government of India supports the people of Manipur. We are dedicated to making Manipur a symbol of peace, prosperity, and progress,” he stated. He also mentioned that the Centre is assisting in the construction of 7,000 new homes for families displaced by the violence and that a special package of approximately Rs 3,000 crore has been approved, with Rs 500 crore allocated specifically for aiding displaced individuals.
