G20 Summit: Modi and Meloni Highlight India-Italy Relations

Johannesburg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had a brief meeting on Saturday, just before the opening session of the G20 Leaders’ Summit at Nasrec, Johannesburg. Their warm exchange of greetings showcased the enhanced rapport that has notably bolstered India-Italy relations in recent years. PM Modi is among several world leaders participating in the two-day summit commencing on Saturday. The two leaders last convened in June during the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, where they reiterated their dedication to strengthening bilateral connections.

Their personal friendship has been widely acknowledged, with Modi describing Meloni in September as an “extraordinary political leader who combines ideas and heart,” and comparing her autobiography to a “Mann Ki Baat,” expressing heartfelt thoughts. In the preface to the Indian edition of Meloni’s book ‘I Am Giorgia,’ PM Modi emphasized the shared values that characterize India–Italy relations, noting “shared civilizing instincts, such as the defense of heritage, the strength of community, and the celebration of femininity as a guiding force.” Meloni expressed her appreciation in a response to Italian news agency Adnkronos, stating, “The words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for whom I have profound respect… deeply touch and honor me.

These are sentiments that I sincerely reciprocate… and testify to the strong bond between our nations.” Modi also expressed gratitude to Meloni in September for her birthday wishes on turning 75, mentioning on X that he “deeply appreciates Italy’s friendship and looks forward to strengthening it further.”
