All 17 passengers safely rescued from halted monorail train

In Mumbai, a monorail train unexpectedly stopped on the tracks due to a “technical snag” on Monday morning, leading to the successful rescue of all 17 passengers onboard. This incident marks the second occurrence in under a month. The stoppage happened at 7:16 am between the Antop Hill Bus Depot and GTBN monorail station in Wadala. A spokesperson for Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), which operates the monorail, stated, “Today, a technical snag occurred in one of the mono trains. As per safety protocols, all 17 passengers on board were swiftly and safely transferred to another train and taken to the next station by 7:40 am.” The affected train is currently being towed away.

Services between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Wadala were operating on a single line with delays, while Wadala to Chembur services continued as normal. According to a Fire Brigade official, two fire engines and two turntables were sent to the scene for post-incident operations, but their assistance was not required as passengers were evacuated after another train was brought onto the parallel track. On August 19, during heavy rainfall, 582 passengers were stranded on a monorail near Mysore Colony station for hours before being rescued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Additionally, another monorail train became stuck at Acharya Atre Nagar station, where 200 passengers were evacuated.

In response to these incidents, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced several immediate and long-term measures to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency.
