Kathmandu: Sushila Karki, Nepal’s newly appointed Prime Minister, has appealed for unity and urged citizens to “join forces to rebuild the nation” following violent protests against corruption that resulted in at least 72 deaths and numerous injuries. In her initial public address since assuming the role of interim prime minister on Friday, Karki emphasized the importance of heeding the voices of the youth. “We must align our actions with the perspectives of the Gen Z generation,” stated the 73-year-old former chief justice, highlighting the demographic that spearheaded the anti-corruption demonstrations. Karki noted that the demands of this group focus on eradicating corruption, promoting good governance, and ensuring economic equality.
She expressed that she had not sought leadership but was thrust into it as her name emerged from the streets. Karki’s appointment as interim prime minister followed extensive discussions involving protest leaders, President Ramchandra Paudel, and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel. Paudel previously declared the dissolution of Parliament and announced elections scheduled for March 5.
