Nikon India Pvt. Ltd. has officially released firmware version 3.00 for its full-frame/FX-format mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z f, which features the Nikon Z mount. This new firmware introduces the Film Grain feature, adding a grainy effect to photos and videos through image processing. Users can adjust the size and intensity of the grain, allowing for distinctive images that evoke the style of traditional film photography. Additionally, an option for [Focus peaking] has been introduced, which displays focus peaking only during zooming, facilitating easier manual focusing. Other enhancements have been made to improve usability and functionality, supporting creators in achieving high-quality shooting and editing results.
Key highlights of firmware version 3.00 for the Z f include the Film Grain feature, which enriches imaging with film-like effects by allowing users to modify grain size (with three options) and intensity (with six options). The randomness of grain position and shape ensures unique results with every shot, providing a film-like shooting experience. This feature can also be combined with Imaging Recipes, which are downloadable picture controls created by Nikon and various creators, enabling users to effortlessly produce unique effects with a simple shutter release.
Furthermore, new features for improved focusing and framing have been added, including the [Only during zoom] option for [Focus peaking], which allows focus peaking to appear only when the view is enlarged for manual focus, making it easier to check focus and composition. A new [Maximum aperture Lv] item has been included to aid in determining the focus peak during manual adjustments. Additional [Grid type] options of [4:3] for still-image live view and [9:16] for video live view have also been introduced for optimal composition in social media contexts.
Other functionalities include seamless live streaming to HDMI devices, an [Automatic monitor display switch] to prevent accidental activation of the viewfinder sensor when the vari-angle monitor is open, the ability to turn on the electronic shutter sound for high-speed frame capture and pixel shift shooting, and a [Record camera orientation] feature that now includes a [Video] option for playback and editing of portrait-oriented videos. The registration process for Imaging Recipes in the Nikon Imaging Cloud has been simplified with an automatic confirmation dialog on the camera monitor.
