OpenAI is Creating a New AI-Driven Video App to Compete with TikTok

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch a bold new venture—an AI-driven short video platform that aims to compete with TikTok. According to a Wired report, this new social media app will feature videos entirely generated by artificial intelligence rather than by human creators. Central to this initiative is Sora 2, OpenAI’s upcoming video-generation model, which has yet to be officially revealed. Unlike TikTok or Instagram Reels, users will not be able to upload personal video clips; instead, the app will present a content feed solely crafted by AI. It is anticipated that this app will adopt the familiar short-video format—vertical feed and swipe-to-scroll interface—but will impose stricter limits on video lengths.

Initial reports indicate that Sora 2 will produce clips of 10 seconds or shorter, significantly differing from TikTok’s current maximum length of 10 minutes. This model harks back to TikTok’s earlier days when videos were limited to 15 seconds, encouraging quick and engaging content that was easy to consume. It remains uncertain whether longer clips will be feasible when Sora 2 is eventually released more broadly. Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly considering an integrated identity verification system. Users who confirm their identity may enable the AI to create videos featuring their likeness, allowing others to tag or remix these representations in their own AI-generated content.

To mitigate concerns regarding misuse, OpenAI is said to plan notifications whenever an individual’s image is utilized, even if the generated video is not made public. The platform will also have restrictions concerning copyright usage. Wired reports that OpenAI aims to prevent certain outputs to avoid copyright conflicts. Nonetheless, questions linger about the effectiveness of these protective measures. The Wall Street Journal has noted that instead of requiring explicit permission from creators and rights holders beforehand, OpenAI may implement an opt-out system, meaning content could be included in Sora 2 videos unless rights holders actively request its removal. Industry experts suggest that OpenAI’s ambitions extend beyond showcasing its AI capabilities.

With TikTok under scrutiny in the United States, particularly regarding ByteDance’s ownership, OpenAI may recognize a unique opportunity to enter the short-video sector. By associating Sora 2 with a dedicated social platform, OpenAI could attract audiences uncertain about TikTok’s future while keeping users within its own ecosystem rather than turning to external video-generation solutions. This development coincides with OpenAI’s plans to launch its own AI chips in 2026, highlighting a broader goal to control both the infrastructure and applications of artificial intelligence. If successful, this new video app could significantly transform how users engage with short-form content online, replacing human uploads with an ongoing stream of AI-generated creativity.
