OpenAI Starts Recruitment in India for New Office

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is preparing to take a significant step in India with the opening of its inaugural office in New Delhi later this year. Prior to the official launch, the artificial intelligence company has initiated its recruitment process, listing three senior-level job openings on its careers page. All three roles are for the position of Account Director, each associated with different departments—Digital Narratives, Large Enterprise, and Strategics. These roles focus on sales and require candidates with extensive experience in managing large accounts and developing long-term business strategies.

The experience requirements differ by department: the Digital Narratives position requires at least seven years in selling platforms or software-as-a-service (SaaS), the Large Enterprise division seeks candidates with a minimum of ten years’ experience, while the Strategics role demands around fourteen years of expertise. Each of these positions will be full-time and offer hybrid work flexibility, meaning employees will not need to be in the office daily. Interested applicants should visit OpenAI’s official careers page. By filtering for “India” under location, they can view available positions within the country. After choosing a suitable role, they can click on the “Apply Now” button to access a detailed description page, which includes eligibility criteria and responsibilities prior to submitting their application.

It’s important to note that OpenAI has set certain application limits; individuals may apply for a maximum of five roles within a 180-day timeframe. OpenAI has prioritized India in its expansion strategy, as it is already the second-largest user base for ChatGPT, following the United States. Reflecting on this growth, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced plans to visit India in September 2025, ahead of the office’s launch. Altman expressed his enthusiasm on X, stating, “We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I’m looking forward to visiting next month.

AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch – ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year – and we are excited to invest much more in India!” This initiative underscores OpenAI’s dedication to establishing a stronger presence in the region. Earlier this month, the company also launched ChatGPT Go, a subscription service tailored for Indian users, priced at ₹399 per month, which offers significantly higher usage limits on messages, image generation, and memory features, along with premium tools such as project management, task creation, and custom GPT development. With recruitment in progress and its first office set to open soon, OpenAI is clearly making a major investment in India.

As AI adoption continues to accelerate in the country, the company seems poised to transform India into a center for growth, innovation, and strategic development.
