Kolkata, May 10 (). An undertrial accused, who was undergoing treatment at a major government hospital in the city, absconded from the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday.
Kolkata Police sources said the absconding accused Suryakant Mandal was in judicial custody at Baruipur Correctional Home in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
Mandal was arrested following a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act at Patharpratima police station in the district.
He was admitted to the Curzon ward of the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital in south Kolkata for treatment, city police sources said. However, he escaped from the ward on Wednesday morning.
The police have started a thorough investigation into the matter. Police suspect that he might have climbed through the drain pipe after escaping through the toilet window. Police is examining the CCTV footage installed in the ward.
Meanwhile, the city police has alerted all the district police headquarters and also released the photographs of the accused. The Pathar Pratima police station under whose jurisdiction the residence of the absconding accused falls has been specially alerted. The city police has also registered an FIR at the local Bhawanipur police station.
