In New Delhi, Constable Sonika Yadav of the Delhi Police achieved a significant milestone by securing a bronze medal at the All India Police Weightlifting Cluster 2025-26 held in Andhra Pradesh this month. At 30 years old and seven months pregnant, Yadav lifted a total of 145 kg on October 17, which marked her position in third place. Her accomplishment is particularly notable as she maintained her athletic performance while expecting. Having participated in powerlifting for three years, she credited her rigorous training and discipline for her physical and mental readiness. “I lifted 145 kilos during my pregnancy, but it was less than my usual capacity. That’s why neither my pregnancy nor my child was affected,” she shared with PTI.
Yadav learned of her pregnancy while preparing for the competition and, after consulting her doctor, was advised to continue her workouts with caution. “My doctor told me I could keep practising as both my body and pregnancy were healthy; I just needed to reduce the weight and be careful,” she explained. Initially, her family had concerns about her decision to compete. “My husband wanted me to back out, but I told him I would participate just for the experience, not for a medal. He supported me completely. My coach and doctor also helped convince my family,” she noted. Her family’s pride was palpable when she earned the bronze.
“My brother and sister-in-law said this medal belongs to our future champion — whether a boy or a girl. That was the happiest moment for me,” she said with a smile.
