Chandigarh, May 14 (). Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit on Saturday visited the Model Jail here and took part in a yoga session conducted by eminent yoga personality Nivedita Joshi.
Purohit addressed the gathering and said that yoga has been found to be the best tool to reduce mental stress and incipient depression among the prisoners. He inspired the jail inmates to become responsible citizens of the country.
Model Jail, Chandigarh is already conducting regular yoga sessions through Art of Living organization.
Nivedita Joshi has taught the latest techniques of yoga to the jail inmates to ensure better mental and physical health.
Purohit appreciated the quality of the sweets and food prepared by the inmates. He said that now Raj Bhavan buys all the sweets from Model Jail Chandigarh.
He also bought three Janata Thalis for himself for Rs.30 each. He also announced a donation of Rs 5 lakh from the discretionary fund of the governor to set up a music band in the prison.
Since the Model Jail is already engaged in taking new initiatives for the betterment of the inmates and prison staff, he also appreciated the efforts being made by the Jail Department involved in Shramdaan under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. There is a unique way of doing Shramdaan. The area inside and around the jail should be neat and clean.
He said that this is not only to keep the prisoners involved in this community-oriented initiative as part of their re-integration, but it also helps in making the surrounding environment cleaner.
He said that it was heartening to know that inmates, jail staff and residents of jail premises voluntarily participate in this Shramdaan campaign to keep their surroundings clean.
He also visited the spice section in the women’s ward, where spices and flour are ground.
