Jaipur. The Rajasthan government has released a new excise policy, bringing significant relief in the rules for opening hotel bars. Now, hotels will require only 10 rooms instead of 20 to obtain a bar license. Additionally, the licensing process has been simplified—applications can now be submitted online and will be auto-approved, providing major ease for hotel and restaurant owners.
Liquor Shop Auction and Group Limits
The government has decided not to increase the number of liquor shops this year. The state will continue with the auction of 7,665 liquor shop licenses. Furthermore, to prevent monopolies, the government has set a limit of five groups across the state, ensuring that no single large group can dominate the market.
Increase in Hotel Bars Expected
With this New Excise Policy, small hotels will now be allowed to operate bars, potentially leading to a rapid increase in the number of hotel bars. Previously, hotels with only 10 to 15 rooms were not permitted to open bars, but now bars may be seen in every locality. Currently, 1,417 hotel-restaurant bars are operating across Rajasthan under valid licenses.
Seasonal Licenses for Tourist Destinations
To boost tourism, the government has introduced seasonal licenses for areas like Jaisalmer, Ranakpur, Mount Abu, Pushkar, Kumbhalgarh, Jawai, and Sawai Madhopur, where tourist footfall is high during peak seasons. Previously, only annual licenses were issued, but now businesses in these areas can obtain seasonal licenses, benefiting the tourism industry.
New License Renewal Option
Under the new policy, liquor shop owners will have the option to renew their licenses for up to four years. This means that if someone purchases a shop license through this year’s auction, they can renew it annually with a fixed increment instead of going through the auction process every year.
New Excise Policy Effective Until March 2029
The Rajasthan government’s new excise policy will remain in effect until March 2029, providing long-term stability for liquor traders, hotel owners, and restaurant operators, helping them plan their businesses efficiently.
