Jaipur. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the Rajasthan government is set to introduce the Anti-Conversion Bill in the state assembly. This bill will be presented during the budget session on Monday. It is expected to include strict provisions against forced religious conversions, with the possibility of jail sentences for offenders.
Long-Standing Demand for Anti-Conversion Law
Since the BJP government came to power in Rajasthan in 2023, there has been a growing demand within the ruling party to implement a strict anti-conversion law. Now, the government is moving forward with this legislation.
Tougher Rules for Live-in Relationships
The government may also introduce new legal provisions concerning live-in relationships (couples living together without marriage). The proposed bill is expected to include strict regulations similar to those in Uttarakhand. Under these provisions, mandatory registration for live-in couples could be enforced. Additionally, new rules and conditions may be imposed on interfaith marriages.
Previous Attempts at Anti-Conversion Laws (Anti-conversion bill)
During former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s tenure, the Religious Freedom Bill was passed twice in 2006 and 2008 in the Rajasthan Assembly. However, at that time, the UPA government did not approve the bill. Now, some of the previous provisions from those bills may be included in the new legislation.
It remains to be seen how much support this bill will receive in the assembly and which provisions will ultimately be implemented.
