The Bihar government has sanctioned the acquisition of 12.08 acres of land to enhance the runway at Saharsa Airport, following evaluations by various official teams. The compensation for the land is estimated at Rs 147.76 crore. An obstacle limitation surface (OLS) survey for the airport was finalized last month, and a social survey team from Patna is expected soon. With these approvals, the groundwork for the airport expansion can commence, leading to expectations that flights might start as early as next year. Plans suggest that 19-seater aircraft will operate from Saharsa, providing an alternative to road and rail travel. Officials assert that improved air connectivity will shorten travel times, aid in emergency transportation for patients, and create local jobs.
However, residents express their frustrations. While nearby airports in Darbhanga and Purnia, located approximately 100 kilometers away, have initiated regular flights, Saharsa’s airport remains inactive. Land acquisition has faced delays, partly due to recent assembly elections, leaving locals to envision the advantages of air travel without experiencing them. The airport, located between government offices and residential areas for senior officials, has largely been overlooked. It has turned into a space for morning walks, driving lessons, and cattle grazing. During significant visits from ministers or the prime minister, the runway is temporarily cleared and repaired, only to revert to disuse afterward.
The community, including those from nearby Nepal, continues to wait for substantial air connectivity that could revolutionize transport in the Kosi division.
