Hyderabad, May 16 (). Buoyed by its electoral victory in Karnataka, the Congress has now shifted its focus to Telangana and is headed by D.K. Shivakumar, who is credited with bringing the party to power in the neighboring state, is considering a key role in Telangana.
Now that it seems certain that Siddaramaiah will be named as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, the Congress leadership is likely to assign a greater role to Shivakumar in the party and utilize his services for the upcoming elections in Telangana.
Assembly elections in Telangana are due at the end of the year and a section of Congress leaders both in Delhi and Hyderabad feel that the party needs a face like Shivakumar to restore its glory in its former bastion.
After twice failing to come to power despite taking credit for the creation of Telangana state and battling defections and infighting, the Congress is desperate to make a comeback.
Shivakumar, who as Karnataka Congress president was instrumental in uniting the party and enlisting the support of various castes and communities, may be asked to replicate the same in Telangana.
Due to the dearth of charismatic leaders in the Congress in Telangana, party workers are said to favor Shivakumar’s induction. It is understood that state party president A.K. Revanth Reddy himself has supported this proposal.
Sources said Shivakumar, who single-handedly defeated the BJP in Karnataka, could help the party counter the saffron party, which is in aggressive mode and is positioning itself as a viable alternative to the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Presenting in
The KCR-led BRS is looking for a hat-trick, relying on the Telangana spirit and the Telangana model of welfare and development.
