Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury while attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey during the match on Saturday. The 26-year-old appeared to land hard on his side and was seen gripping his abdomen in pain while lying on the field at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Medical staff attended to him, and he was subsequently taken off the field for further evaluation. Iyer did not return for the remainder of the match, which India won by nine wickets. Australia had already clinched the series with victories in Perth and Adelaide.
According to The Times of India, Iyer’s injury was deemed ‘life-threatening at that moment.’ On Monday, the BCCI released an official statement confirming that Iyer had sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding in the third ODI against Australia. He was admitted to the hospital for further examination, and scans revealed a laceration of the spleen. He is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be medically stable and recovering well. The board also noted that the Team India doctor will remain in Sydney for several days to monitor Iyer’s condition and provide daily assessments of his recovery in the hospital.
Medical professionals specializing in spleen injuries commented that clinically stable patients are usually closely monitored, often in an ICU setting, during the initial days. They typically observe whether bleeding has ceased and if the blood is being reabsorbed by the body. If the bleeding worsens, doctors may need to perform a procedure called embolization to block the affected blood vessel.
