Shubman Gill Takes Over as ODI Captain from Rohit Sharma

Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, as announced by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on Saturday. This change comes ahead of the three-match series against Australia, which starts on October 19 in Perth. The decision to appoint Gill, 26, is part of the current management’s strategy to prepare him for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Gill now captains the team in two formats, including Tests and ODIs, and serves as the vice-captain in T20Is. The selection committee, under Agarkar’s leadership, met on Saturday to finalize the squad for the Australia tour, consulting head coach Gautam Gambhir before implementing the captaincy change.

Earlier this year, Gill assumed the role of Test captain following Rohit’s retirement from that format.
