Toronto, May 12 (). A 58-year-old Sikh temple worker has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Canada’s British Columbia province.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they are investigating the incident. The incident happened earlier this month at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran in Newton.
The suspect was arrested a day after the incident. However, he was later released on the condition that he would not have any contact with the victim and would not go unaccompanied to any place where a girl below 16 years of age is present.
Police said no charges have yet been filed against the temple employee and that the suspect’s employer has been notified of the allegations.
Our Special Victims Unit is investigating, Corporal Sarabjit Sangha said in a news release. We urge anyone with information to come forward. Investigators are working to gather evidence and further the investigation.
Under the Criminal Code of Canada, the maximum sentence for sexual assault charges is 14 years.
The incident follows two more cases of sexual assault on minors by Indian-origin men in the month of May.
Bhupinder Singh Sonu, a 40-year-old Sikh priest and teacher, was charged this month with six sex offenses involving children in the province of British Columbia. Before Sonu, Sunil Anand, a 62-year-old Indo-Canadian homeopathic doctor, was accused of sexually assaulting a young female patient in Brampton.
