Sonepur: The renowned Harihar Kshetra Sonepur Fair has once again become a significant draw for travelers from across India and around the world. Recognized as Asia’s largest cattle fair, it has evolved into a cultural and tourism hub. The Bihar Tourism Department has implemented robust measures to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors. People from various regions of India and even international travelers from countries such as Japan are attending the fair and enjoying the experience. A dedicated Tourist Village has been established close to the fair, featuring luxury Swiss-style cottages for guests. These accommodations are categorized into two types, Mini Darbari and Rajwadi, reflecting their regal aesthetic.
Each tent offers five-star amenities, including air-conditioning, attached bathrooms, continuous power and water supply, food services, and comprehensive security. The nightly rates are set at Rs 3,000 for Indian tourists and Rs 5,000 for foreign visitors, with many finding the tents to be both comfortable and reasonably priced. To facilitate travel, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation has organized special luxury vehicles to transport tourists from Patna to the fair. Departures occur daily from Veer Chand Patel Path and the nearby Guru Nanak Bhawan on Daroga Rai Path.
A variety of vehicle options are available to cater to different budgets — AC and double-decker buses are priced at Rs 900 per person, Traveller buses at Rs 950, Innovas at Rs 1,100, Wingers at Rs 900, and Etios at Rs 1,300. This service operates daily from 12 noon to 7 pm. Another highlight this year is a special couple package, available for Rs 6,000, which includes hotel accommodation, an Etios AC car for travel, an experienced guide, and all meals including breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. This package has garnered considerable interest from couples seeking a comprehensive and enjoyable experience at the fair.
The Sonepur Fair commences annually on Kartik Purnima at the sacred meeting point of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, attracting millions of devotees and tourists for the month-long festivities.
