Colombo: Sri Lanka and New Zealand shared points as their Women’s World Cup match was abandoned due to persistent rain following a strong batting performance by the hosts here on Tuesday. Choosing to bat, Nilakshika De Silva’s aggressive fifty contrasted with skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s elegant half-century, allowing Sri Lanka to set a challenging score of 258 for 6. However, rain hit the R Premadasa Stadium just before New Zealand began their chase, and the match could not continue. After the washout, Sri Lanka remained in seventh place with 2 points from four matches, while New Zealand, now with 3 points, held steady in fifth place.
This marks the second World Cup match to be washed out, as Sri Lanka’s game against Australia was also abandoned last week due to rain.
