Patna, April 22 (). Former Deputy Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi on Saturday asked several questions to the government while insisting on withdrawal of cases against about 8.35 lakh people arrested so far under the prohibition law.
Modi said that these lakhs of people have not been caught in any serious, heinous crime like murder, kidnapping, rape, bankloot, that they should not be given a chance to improve by giving forgiveness.
He said in a clear tone that such a large number of people who are guilty in Bihar only because of drinking alcohol, had they been in other states, they would not have come under the category of criminals.
Modi said that only such poor people are being jailed under the prohibition law, who cannot pay Rs 2000 fine. In this situation, rich people are easily left out.
He questioned that when the prohibition law can be amended thrice during 6 years, then why amnesty cannot be given once. He said why 4.58 lakh cases related to prohibition have not been settled yet.
The BJP leader asked why 6.06 lakh people who were arrested for consuming liquor were not punished and there were more than 30 incidents of death due to consumption of spurious liquor, but why not a single liquor mafia was punished.
He also said that after the prohibition of liquor, consumption of drugs like cannabis, opium, ganja has increased in the state.
