11 December 2025 | Former US President Donald Trump is back in the news for his remarks on technology, particularly concerning 6G. During a live television appearance with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, Trump suggested that 6G might provide “a little bit deeper view into somebody’s skin,” a comment that quickly attracted attention online for its inaccuracy and casual delivery.
Trump’s statement came as he reflected on mobile network advancements, stating, “So we’re into 6G now, yeesh. 5G — I was a leader on 5G, getting that done, and now they’re up to 6. What does that do, give you a little bit deeper view into somebody’s skin?” He then shifted to reminiscing about older cameras and joked with those around him. His comments highlight a misunderstanding of what 6G technology entails.
Understanding 6G Technology
For clarity, 6G does not relate to video resolution or camera quality. Instead, it represents the next generation of cellular connectivity expected to follow 5G, promising faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable wireless communication. Video resolution terms like 4K and 8K are unrelated to mobile network generations, a fact that experts are now reiterating following Trump’s remarks.
Trump’s History of Tech Misstatements
This is not the first time Trump’s comments on technology have raised eyebrows. In 2019, he expressed a desire for 6G “as soon as possible,” despite the technology not yet being developed. Additionally, he has made various claims, including that tariffs imposed on other countries are borne by those nations and not American consumers, and even suggested that the Moon is part of Mars.
Impact of Trump’s Leadership on 5G
Regarding Trump’s self-proclaimed leadership on 5G, the record is mixed. His administration approved the T-Mobile–Sprint merger, which critics argue did not fulfill its promises to enhance competition. Furthermore, his FCC appointees rolled back net neutrality protections and cleared additional spectrum for carriers, while also beginning to dismantle broadband nutrition labels designed to clarify service fees for consumers.
Trump’s latest comments add another chapter to his ongoing history of misunderstood statements about technology, once again prompting experts to clarify the basics in the aftermath.
