Udaipur. Arvind Singh Mewar, a senior member of Udaipur’s former royal family, passed away at the age of 80. He had been battling health issues for a long time and was undergoing treatment at Shambhu Niwas, City Palace.
A Legacy Rooted in Mewar’s Rich History
Arvind Singh Mewar was a direct descendant of the great warrior Maharana Pratap. His father, Bhagwat Singh Mewar, and mother, Sushila Kumari Mewar, were part of the royal lineage. His elder brother, Mahendra Singh Mewar, passed away on November 10, 2024.
Royal Property Dispute and Legal Battle
Between 1963 and 1983, former Maharana Bhagwat Singh leased several royal properties to sustain the family’s legacy. However, this decision sparked a dispute when his eldest son, Mahendra Singh Mewar, challenged it in court.
Mahendra Singh argued that the family’s ancestral assets should be equally distributed, rejecting the Rule of Primogeniture, which stated that the eldest son would inherit all royal wealth.
Responding to the case, Bhagwat Singh asserted in court that these properties were ‘Impartible Estates’ (indivisible) and could not be divided.
Appointment of Arvind Singh Mewar as Executor
On May 15, 1984, Bhagwat Singh named his younger son, Arvind Singh Mewar, as the executor of his properties in his will. Since then, Arvind Singh Mewar played a key role in the development of Udaipur’s tourism industry and cultural preservation.
Pioneer of Destination Weddings in India
During the Rajasthan Summit, Arvind Singh Mewar’s son, Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, highlighted his father’s visionary contributions to Udaipur’s global reputation.
In the 1980s, Arvind Singh Mewar introduced the concept of destination weddings, which was initially met with skepticism and mockery. However, today, Udaipur is recognized as one of the world’s most sought-after wedding destinations, attracting celebrities and dignitaries from across the globe.

The public viewing of Arvind Singh Mewar’s mortal remains will be held at City Palace from 7 AM on Monday, followed by his final procession at 11 AM.
