UP: CBI registers case of abetment to suicide in death of medical student

New Delhi, April 22 (). The CBI has registered a case of abetment to suicide in connection with the death of medical student Ananya Dixit under suspicious circumstances in 2017 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Ananya was found dead under suspicious circumstances on 11 September 2017, three days after she was admitted to the Shri Ram Murti Memorial Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS-IMS) College.

Since the girl’s parents were not satisfied with the investigation by the local police, they approached the Supreme Court, seeking transfer of the case to the CBI.

The local police had also filed a charge sheet against the two persons under section 306/201 of the IPC. The matter was then handed over to the Crime Branch team, which filed a closure report.

By then the local metropolitan magistrate had taken cognizance of the charge sheet and the case was transferred to the sessions court.

In its order, the apex court had said, “A minor girl has died unnaturally during her medical studies and reports have been submitted by two investigating agencies – one has named two persons as accused in the chargesheet and the other has filed a closure report.” . Keeping in view the fact that there are contradictions in the two reports filed by the two investigating agencies, and considering the nature of the matter, we are of the opinion that further investigation should be conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Ananya’s father Anadi Dixit had alleged that she was subjected to mental harassment in the name of ragging. He had alleged that the college administration did not wait for the police and broke open the door and took away some things, which raised suspicion.

Her father alleged that the college administrators did not inform him and he came to know about his daughter’s death from someone else.

In the last three years, she was the third student in the college who allegedly committed suicide.

Earlier, Priyana Singh, a girl from Bhiwani, Haryana, committed suicide in 2015, while Yash Kumar Khatwani took the extreme step in 2016.

Dixit’s parents had said that three bright students ended their lives in three years, which proved that something serious was amiss.
