Lucknow, April 9 (). The Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission on Sunday announced that the elections to urban local bodies will be held in two phases on May 4 and 11, with the counting of votes taking place on May 13.
State Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar told reporters that polling will be held in nine divisions in each phase.
In the first phase, polling will be held in Saharanpur, Moradabad, Agra, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Devipatan, Gorakhpur and Varanasi mandals.
In the second phase, polling will be held in Meerut, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, Ayodhya, Basti, Azamgarh and Mirzapur mandals.
With the announcement of the dates, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force.
Elections will be held on 14,684 seats in 760 urban local bodies of the state.
According to the State Election Commissioner, the total number of urban voters has increased from 3,35,95,547 in 2017 to 4,32,31,827 after the final publication of electoral rolls.
Kumar said, according to the final figures received by the Commission after the revision of electoral rolls, a total of 96,36,280 new voters have been added this time.
He said that the main reason for this increase is the inclusion of large number of rural areas in Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats.
He said, of the total new voters, 21,23,268 were earlier residents of villages before being shifted to urban areas.
He said that 4,33,088 became first-time voters who turned 18 on January 1, 2023.
