Lucknow, September 5. In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit India @2047’, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is steering Uttar Pradesh towards becoming a fully developed state by 2047. A detailed roadmap is being formulated across various sectors, focusing specifically on a new model of urban development. Central to this initiative is the plan to establish five international-level smart cities over the next 22 years—cities that will transform Uttar Pradesh’s standing in terms of investment, connectivity, and quality of life on a global scale. The ‘Viksit UP @2047′ vision document presents an ambitious strategy to convert every city into a smart city.
The objective is to guarantee that all citizens have access to clean drinking water, 24-hour electricity, concrete housing, modern public transport, and metro as well as light metro services. Among the pivotal resolutions is the establishment of five world-class smart cities that will meet global standards in infrastructure, investment potential, and living conditions. There is a strong emphasis on upgrading sewerage and waste management systems. The government plans to implement scientifically advanced sewage treatment across all cities for effective wastewater disposal. Additionally, a comprehensive solid waste management framework is being developed to ensure organized collection, recycling, and safe disposal. These efforts will not only lead to cleaner and healthier cities but also ensure environmental sustainability and protect public health.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stressed that urban development transcends mere infrastructure construction; it is about improving citizens’ quality of life. Upholding Prime Minister Modi’s vision, he stated that by 2047, Uttar Pradesh will not only become India’s most developed state but will also serve as a global model for sustainable and inclusive urbanization. In the past eight years, urban development in Uttar Pradesh has experienced remarkable progress. A total of 117 new urban local bodies have been established, and 123 have been expanded. Under the Smart City Mission, 17 district headquarters have been modernized. The formation of the State Capital Region—linking Lucknow with five adjacent districts—has set a new standard for planned development.
The Aspirational City Scheme is incorporating 100 rapidly growing cities into the development narrative, while the Mukhyamantri Nagar Srijan Yojana has resulted in the construction of 2,534 km of roads and 342 km of drainage systems across 240 urban bodies. Special focus has also been given to historically underserved areas like Purvanchal and Bundelkhand. It is significant to note that prior to 2017, Uttar Pradesh’s urban framework was characterized by inadequate infrastructure, chaotic expansion, insufficient basic amenities, and financial limitations that obstructed planned growth. However, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s guidance, transformative measures over the past eight years have fundamentally altered this landscape, establishing the groundwork for a developed and future-ready Uttar Pradesh.
