New Delhi, December 09, 2025. – Prime Minister Modi initiates a Lok Sabha debate on Vande Mataram's 150th anniversary, sparking political discussions on its historical context.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced the Lok Sabha debate commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. This discussion arises amid political tensions, as the PM reiterated his claim that the Congress party removed essential verses from the song in 1937, a decision he argued contributed to the atmosphere that eventually led to India’s partition.
Parliamentary Proceedings
The government has allocated ten hours for the debate in the Lok Sabha, with an additional three hours designated for NDA members. The discussion is set to continue in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah is anticipated to take the lead.
Political Responses
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded to the PM’s assertions, clarifying that the 1937 decision was made collectively by the Congress Working Committee, which included prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, and Maulana Azad.
Various parties, including the BJP, Congress, and regional allies, are taking part in the debate aimed at emphasizing the historical significance and evolving interpretation of the national song.
