Protests in Leh, Ladakh escalated into violence on Wednesday as citizens called for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule. The unrest began when two elderly hunger strikers collapsed and required hospitalization while advocating for these demands. Youth organizations initiated a shutdown, leading to protesters setting a security vehicle ablaze and attacking a BJP office. In response, police deployed tear gas and used batons to disperse the crowd amidst stone-throwing incidents. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been a prominent figure in non-violent advocacy for statehood and Sixth Schedule status, urged for calm during the outbreak of violence.
He labeled the unrest as a “Gen-Z revolution” reflecting the frustrations of unemployed youth, warning that violent actions could jeopardize their cause while promoting ongoing peaceful resistance. A new round of discussions between Ladakh leaders and the central government is set for October 6, which may provide a potential resolution.
