Kolkata, 20 April (). Visva-Bharati University has issued a final eviction notice to Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen asking him to vacate the disputed 13 decimal land within the university campus in West Bengal’s Birbhum district by May 6. Sen is currently in the US.
The university authorities have issued this fresh notice despite an executive magistrate in Bolpur on April 13 ordering police intervention to maintain peace in the area.
According to sources, the order was passed by the executive magistrate following a petition filed by the lawyer of the Nobel laureate economist. It expressed apprehensions of violation of law and order over a possible eviction drive by university authorities against Sen over the disputed portion of land.
In the order, the Executive Magistrate directed Shantiniketan police station in-charge to maintain peace and tranquility in the area till the matter is resolved immediately.
Significantly, the dispute is about 13 decimal land. It began when Bidyut Chakraborty, Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, started accusing Sen of illegally occupying 1.38 acres of land, which is more than his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.
However, the Nobel laureate denied the allegation.
