In New Delhi, officials from the Election Commission announced on Wednesday that over half of voters in many states might not need to present any documentation, as they will be included in the electoral rolls from the last special intensive revision (SIR) conducted in their states. They noted that most states had their last SIR for voter lists between 2002 and 2004, with that year serving as the cutoff for the upcoming SIR. The Election Commission plans to set a date for the pan-India special intensive revision soon, and the process to update the voter lists nationwide is expected to occur before the year’s end.
Chief Electoral Officers have been instructed to prepare the electoral rolls published after the previous SIR in their states. Some state CEOs have already made their updated voter lists available on their websites. For instance, the Delhi CEO’s website features the 2008 voter list from the last intensive revision in the capital, while Uttarakhand’s CEO website displays the 2006 electoral roll from its last SIR. The previous SIRs will determine the cutoff date, similar to how the 2003 voter list of Bihar is being utilized for the intensive revision.
