Dharamvir Singh, a superintendent-rank officer in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has demanded to be relieved as a member of the SIT probing the scam. The CBI counsel told this to a single-judge bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court on Friday.

The CBI counsel also told Justice Gangopadhyay’s bench that since the SIT was constituted following the direction of the Calcutta High Court, Singh’s plea for premature retirement cannot be proceeded with without the latter’s approval.

Justice Gangopadhyay assured the CBI counsel to take a decision in the matter at the earliest. He also suggested the inclusion of more Bengali speaking officers in the Special Investigation Team.

In November last year, Justice Gangopadhyay had ordered the reconstitution of the earlier Special Investigation Team set up by the CBI in the case. In that reshuffle, two officers, a deputy superintendent and an inspector, were replaced, but Dharamvir Singh remained as a member of the team.

Ordering the reconstitution of the SIT at that time, Justice Gangopadhyay had said that the reshuffle had become necessary to speed up the investigation system, which according to him was moving at a very slow pace at that time.
