WhatsApp is finally providing a long-anticipated feature for Apple Watch users. The messaging platform has started testing a dedicated WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch, enabling users to chat and respond to messages directly from their wrist without needing to reach for their iPhone. As reported by WABetaInfo, the app is now available in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS, giving Apple Watch owners access to chats, quick replies, and media previews. While this update is significant, the app still serves as a companion app rather than being fully independent. Therefore, users must keep their iPhone connected for messaging to function, as the Apple Watch version currently does not support standalone capabilities.
Nonetheless, this launch signifies a noteworthy advancement for WhatsApp on watchOS. Previously, Apple Watch users were limited to viewing incoming notifications with restricted options for replies. The new app enhances the experience with a more comprehensive interface and interaction model—users can browse chats, send messages, react with emojis, and even send voice messages directly from the watch. The linking process is straightforward and automatic; once the Apple Watch is paired with the iPhone, WhatsApp syncs seamlessly without the need for QR code scanning. Additionally, the app features a connection indicator on the watch display, which shows syncing progress or alerts users if the connection to the iPhone is lost.
Within the chat interface, users can view recent conversations, access pinned or disappearing messages, and see shared media. The voice dictation feature enables quick replies, while a tap-and-hold gesture allows for instant reactions to messages. Common response options are conveniently located at the bottom of the chat screen. Notification handling has also improved. This companion app integrates more effectively with the Apple Watch notification system, allowing users to read and respond to messages, view images, and react directly from notifications—eliminating the need to open the phone for most interactions. Although this new companion app brings WhatsApp closer to achieving full smartwatch functionality, it still lags behind its Wear OS version.
On Android’s smartwatch platform, WhatsApp already allows reading, replying, viewing images, and sending voice notes without needing a connected phone. In contrast, the Apple Watch variant currently depends on the iPhone. Despite this limitation, the beta release demonstrates WhatsApp’s strong intention to broaden its ecosystem and provide an enhanced wearable experience. As the beta progresses, additional features and standalone capabilities are anticipated. For now, Apple Watch users interested in trying out the app can join the WhatsApp beta program to access these early functionalities. Although WhatsApp has not disclosed an official release date, this beta signifies the start of a new phase for iPhone users who wish to remain connected from their wrist.
