WhatsApp Beta for iOS Introduces Multi-Account Functionality

WhatsApp is finally addressing one of the most requested features by iPhone users: the ability to run multiple accounts on a single device. Until now, iPhone owners had to either carry separate devices or rely on the WhatsApp Business app as a workaround. This often felt clunky and incomplete, but that’s beginning to change. Meta has started testing native multi-account support through a new beta build on TestFlight. Early users report that the feature is making account management much easier. However, there’s a catch: the feature is currently available only in the beta version and has not yet been rolled out to the stable release.

According to WABetaInfo, testers have noticed a new section in the app’s settings dedicated to account management. “The option to add and switch between multiple accounts is now available within the app’s settings menu,” the report notes. Depending on the rollout, users may see this feature as a new “Account List” in settings or a dedicated button near the profile QR code. Through this interface, users can add an additional account without needing a secondary phone, the Business app, or any awkward hacks. Currently, the beta allows up to two accounts per device.

Users can register a brand-new number that hasn’t been used on WhatsApp before, reconnect an older account previously active on another device or WhatsApp Business, or add a companion account by scanning a QR code from another phone. Once linked, the chats and preferences sync automatically, providing a smooth transition. WhatsApp ensures that each account operates independently. Chat history, backup settings, and notification preferences remain separate, preventing any overlap between personal and work conversations. To make account management easier, notifications clearly indicate which account they belong to—a feature that will be particularly useful for those juggling multiple numbers.

The rollout comes as WhatsApp is also preparing to introduce usernames, hinting at a future where phone numbers might no longer be the sole identifier on the platform. Multi-account support is a natural step in that direction, giving users more flexibility in how they interact on the app. While there is no confirmed timeline for a full rollout, the start of real-world beta testing suggests that iPhone users won’t have to wait much longer. For now, only users participating in the TestFlight beta can explore this feature, but the foundation is set for a wider release in the near future.

With this move, WhatsApp is simplifying the lives of users who balance personal and professional communications, making it easier than ever to manage multiple identities on a single iPhone.
