Srinagar, April 1 (). Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly Mann Ki Baat program has recently mentioned Dal Lake and a special vegetablethe Lotus Stemthat is grown in the lake. In Kashmiri, the lotus stem (lotus stem/kamal kakdi) is known as nadru.
He said that lotus cucumber is not only reaching different states of the country, but is also exported to other countries including UAE. The correspondent recently met the Managing Director of Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) and also interacted with the lotus stem farmers who are part of the FPO.
Responding to the PM’s mention, FPO MD Muhammad Abbas expressed great happiness and said that for the farmers who grow vegetables in Dal Lake, it is very encouraging. He said, it not only inspired the farmers here, but also created a new zeal and enthusiasm.
He said that due to the mention of PM Modi, Lotus Stem was promoted at the national and international level, which would directly benefit the farmers here. There are strong possibilities of improving the standard of living of the above farmers by increasing the income of this particular vegetable at the local, national and international level. During the conversation, Mohammad Abbas gave the credit of this success to the Director Agriculture and District Development Commissioner, who provided full help.
After Prime Minister Narendra’s mention in Mann Ki Baat, more farmers are joining and at least 2,000 farmers are expected to join FPOs by 2024. In response to a question, he said that the District Development Commissioner had promised the farmers to provide better market facilities at the local level. The farmers also thanked the Prime Minister.
We are now hopeful that the lotus stem associated with the culture of Kashmir will gain national and international fame, which will double our income, said a farmer. We are focusing our attention on maximum production of this vegetable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the lotus stem of Dal Lake in Kashmir is reaching foreign countries and this is increasing the income of farmers.
Addressing the nation in the monthly radio program last Sunday, Prime Minister Modi said that Dal Lake is also famous for delicious lotus stems. Lotus stem is known by different names in different parts of the country.
