Lucknow, June 2 (). Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has said that the country’s image has been badly damaged by the open display of disrespect towards women wrestlers by the ruling BJP. He said that this is a clear indication of the feudal mindset of the party, which is a blot on the image of democratic India in the world.
He said, reports of exploitation, harassment and forced silencing of dissenting voices are being published internationally and are maligning India’s name in front of the world community. BJP basically nurtures a feudal mindset, where neither women nor common man is respected. He said, BJP has embarrassed democracy.
Akhilesh cited news reports on how women wrestlers accused a powerful man of sexual harassment and went on a hunger strike to throw their Olympic medals into the Ganges after being evicted from the protest site in New Delhi.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Akhilesh attacked the BJP over its handling of sexual harassment allegations leveled by women wrestlers against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The wrestlers had lodged a complaint with the police and approached the Supreme Court for registration of an FIR in the matter.
Akhilesh said, on one hand, when elections are round the corner, BJP talks about Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao and when these girls raise their voice against harassment and exploitation, the government treats them like this.
