X Introduces Encrypted Direct Messaging for All Users

X, the platform previously known as Twitter, is making significant strides in secure communication by rolling out XChat, its encrypted direct messaging service, to all global users. Previously, this feature was limited to Premium subscribers during beta testing. As reported by TechCrunch, the service offers end-to-end encryption and functions independently from the standard inbox. Users can send private messages, share media, create group chats, pin conversations for quick access, and mark messages as read or unread. There are indications that a disappearing messages feature may be added in future updates. Users wishing to utilize XChat must opt in. On the desktop version, the new Chat tab can be found in the Messages section, just above Message Requests.

For mobile users, XChat is accessible directly from the main navigation panel, located above Communities. To use the feature, users need to set up a four-digit security code, which enhances privacy and protects against unauthorized access. Once configured, users can chat exclusively with others who have also enabled XChat. Notably, this new feature does not replace the existing messaging system; older non-encrypted conversations are now categorized under a section labeled Unencrypted. This development underscores X’s ongoing commitment to transforming its platform under Elon Musk’s leadership. In addition to encrypted messaging, the company is exploring innovative methods to display posts in order to minimize echo chambers and enhance user experiences.

Recently, X began testing a system where posts gaining “likes” from individuals with differing viewpoints are highlighted for select Community Notes contributors. These contributors are encouraged to assess and provide feedback on the posts. X explains this initiative as a way to develop an open-source algorithm capable of identifying posts that resonate with various perspectives. Contributors can respond with options like “I learned something interesting” or “I don’t agree with it.” The company believes these responses could help pinpoint posts that appeal to a wider audience. X stated, “People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics.

This experimental feature seeks to uncover ideas and insights that bridge perspectives, bringing awareness to what resonates broadly and potentially motivating users to share those ideas. Ultimately, it could help advance society in ways that reflect the desires of the people.” Through XChat and its initiatives to promote diverse viewpoints, X is clearly aiming to evolve into more than just a social platform; it aspires to be a venue for private, secure, and balanced digital discussions.
