Meta spokesperson Andy Stone addressed these concerns in a statement, noting, “The company is taking these temporary steps while developing longer-term measures to ensure teens have safe, age-appropriate AI experiences,” and mentioned that the protections are currently being implemented and will be adjusted over time. The situation has incited bipartisan criticism in Washington, with U.S. Senator Josh Hawley initiating a formal investigation into Meta’s AI practices, seeking internal documents and explanations regarding the policies that permitted chatbots to engage in what many deemed inappropriate interactions. Lawmakers from both parties expressed their alarm, cautioning that these features could jeopardize minors.
This controversy arose from an internal Meta document reviewed by Reuters, which indicated that chatbots were allowed to “flirt” and take part in “romantic role play” with underage individuals. Meta later validated the document’s authenticity but claimed it was a mistake. Stone remarked that the problematic examples and notes had been erroneous and inconsistent with the company’s policies and have since been eliminated. The backlash has heightened the pressure on Meta to prove its commitment to protecting younger users, especially as it aggressively ventures into AI-driven experiences across its platforms.
