He said, instead of the originally scheduled two-day visit, the visit could be reduced to just one day. Also, ministers can limit their movement within the state capital.

As per the earlier plan, the minister was to come to Kolkata on May 8 and attend a public rally in two adjoining districts of Nadia and Murshidabad. He was to attend a cultural function on May 9 to mark the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, hold a meeting with top state party leaders and fly back to New Delhi the same day.

The state committee member said, in the changed schedule, Shah’s program in the state would probably be reduced to May 9. On that day, he will attend a cultural programme, hold a meeting with state leaders and return to the national capital. During this visit, he will not address any public rally, as he did in Birbhum last month.

BJP’s state president in West Bengal and party’s Lok Sabha member Sukanta Majumdar has also confirmed that the Union minister’s state visit has been limited to one day (May 9).

Now, two different reasons are being given by two sections of the state leadership for curtailing the Union ministry’s visit to West Bengal.

Shah’s busy schedule elsewhere is the official reason for the rescheduled visit. However, another member of the state committee said that since Bengalis would be in a celebratory mood from May 8 due to Gurudev’s birth anniversary the next day, the party leadership canceled a full-fledged public political meeting.

The last time Amit Shah addressed a public meeting in West Bengal on April 14 at Suri in Birbhum. During the meeting, he had claimed that if the BJP managed to win 35 of the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats in next year’s general elections, the Trinamool Congress government would fall much before its term (till 2026).
