Apple’s N1 Chip Enhances iPhone 17 Wireless Speeds Compared to Android

India’s fixed broadband download speed continued to rise in August 2021. Wi-Fi has emerged as the primary performance driver in 2025, with Apple leading this trend. The key factor is their new wireless silicon solution, the N1 chip. This in-house chip powers every model in the iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. According to Ookla’s researchers, who analyzed anonymized speed test data globally during the initial six weeks post-launch, the performance of the iPhone 17 is impressive. The results indicate that devices equipped with the N1 chip have experienced download and upload speed enhancements of up to 40 percent compared to the previous iPhone 16 models across various regions.

A noteworthy observation is that the iPhone 17’s Wi-Fi speed enhancements are achieved without fully utilizing many advanced features of Wi-Fi 7, such as the 320 MHz channels, which the N1 chip does not support. However, this limitation has not hindered performance, as these channels can only function with certain premium routers that are not widely available in consumer or enterprise environments. In comparison to Android flagship devices, the iPhone 17 generally outperforms them in wireless performance. Nonetheless, a few Android models, like the Xiaomi 15T Pro, excelled in upload speed and latency, while Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series demonstrated strong overall performance with the lowest latency in key areas.
