Bangalore, June 1 (). Election strategist Sunil Kanugolu, who led the Congress to a resounding victory in the Karnataka elections, has been appointed Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
An order in this regard said that Sunil Kanugolu will be the Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister and will have the status of a cabinet minister.
Sources in the party said on Thursday that this step has been taken as per the desire of the high command to win maximum seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state. The Congress fought fiercely against the high-profile campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several national leaders and emerged victorious in the assembly elections.
Sunil Kanugolu strategised and gave a roadmap for the Congress. The party was able to win only one Lok Sabha seat out of 28 in the 2019 general election. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s brother D.K. Only Suresh could win. BJP had won 25 seats.
Sumalatha Ambareesh won as an independent candidate from Mandya seat. Former PM H.D. Deve Gowda’s grandson Prajwal Revanna won the election from the Hassan seat.
Deve Gowda himself had lost the election in Tumakuru seat in a humiliating manner to BJP candidate GS Basavaraju.
Now, in the changed political scenario, Congress is aiming to get more than 20 seats in Karnataka.
Sources say that Sunil Kanugolu’s team systematically surveyed all the 224 assembly constituencies in the state and chalked out a strategy for the Congress.
Kanugolu also worked towards taking the five guarantees to the voters. He has been working with the Congress for a year. He was born in Ballari and lives in Bangalore. He has also previously worked for BJP, DMK and AIADMK.
